After the district turned off the Wi-Fi for all students in February, Superintendent Bob Morrison ordered the Wi-Fi to be turned back on at all campuses.
“The superintendent made the decision to turn it on and the technology department is now in the process of putting in the infrastructure to support it better,” Campus technology Assistant Arleta Luke said.
The wireless connection known as ‘GISDcart’ was disabled because it became too slow because of so much additional traffic created by students’ cell phones and other mobile devices.
“We are in the process right now of expanding the wireless at every high school and at every school, but right now, they are putting in new switches and adding access points to all the other high school,” Cathy Barck said.
This upcoming school year, there will be a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) form that parents must sign that will activate each student’s wireless account.
“There is gonna be a policy coming out in the fall that people have to adhere to just like your AUP for your computer, it’ll be for the wireless,” Cathy Barck said. “That’s getting ready for publication right now so I suppose they’ll put it all out in the fall with the student handbook.”
