On Mondays after a stressful day at school and a boring day at home I get to look forward to my sewing class, Sew Lovely. Every Mondays at seven, I attend it with my friend Victoria Hernandez.
When I first went, I was excited but also nervous, because I had never really used a sewing machine. After going a few times and learning how to put the bobbin (a wheel that goes under the needle plate that sews the bottom part of the seam) and thread in, we got to work. Our first project was to make a make-up bag. The outside fabric was black with pink and red hearts, and the inside fabric was a silky fuchsia. Every thing was going great until we had to put the zipper on. That’s when I abandoned it and went to on to do something else. When we became more familiar with the old sewing machines, we were asked by the R.O.C’s pregnancy center to make shoulder bags so the mothers could carry baby necessities.
The process wasn’t hard at all and that led us to doing many bags for them. With nothing to do Victoria and I went through some patterns to see what we wanted to make. The idea of making bright neon pajama pants was born. It had taken me about two to three months to finish. Sewing isn’t as easy as it seems. You have to have the right patterns, colors, thread, measurements and patience. My teacher refers to sewing like a puzzle, because if you lose one small piece it won’t come together as well as it should look.
Last summer, our church was going to our youth camp and Victoria decided to make a flag for us to feel more special there. Our flag was an extravagant blue with colorful lettering saying “F.H.B.C YOUTH” on both sides. On one side, we wrote down the names of all the kids that went to camp in paint. It was a fun project but for some reason it’s not in either of our possessions at the moment.
My most recent finished project was a two layered skirt. The bottom layer is a light pink and the top is black with small light pink polka dots. It’s not the best, but it makes me happy because I know for a fact that no one else has the same skirt as me. Going to Sew Lovely isn’t stressful because we are always laughing in there, were all really cool with each other. I love going to Sew Lovely because it gives me the chance to create something that really defines my personality for the price of nothing.
