Freshman Nemesis Ruiz was overweight when he joined the Garland Police Boxing Club in 2012. While losing weight, he would also learn how to fight and stand up for himself. Six years later, Ruiz had the chance to compete in the Region Six Silver Gloves.

“Silver Gloves is the tournament that you always want to go to, because you get to advance and people begin knowing you,” Ruiz said.

“You begin going to more tournaments, and you can also go to the Junior Olympics. If you win a year or two in a row, people can start looking at you for the Olympics.”

Ruiz advanced to state in McKinney, and with a lot of working out, conditioning, a tough mindset and the boxers he looks up to in mind, he was able to advance to Regionals in Little Rock, Arkansas in Jan. 2018.

Ruiz reveals he would have only changed a few things about his performance in the Silver Gloves.

“My performance I couldn’t have changed, but I would change the way I was going into the fight,” Ruiz said. “I wanted to feel sure instead of nervous.”

Ruiz looks up to boxers like Mayweather, Canelo and Muhammad Ali. With passion and skills for the sport, he still believes it’s better to be respected than feared both in and outside of the ring.

“You don’t want to be feared in the ring because the other [opponent] would have his instincts up and more aware of what you can do, and he’ll be quicker,” Ruiz said. “You don’t want to be feared outside of the ring, because you want to make friends and be social. Not everything is about boxing.”
