I had VIP access to the Mam’selle contest dress rehearsal, and as I sat in the gym awaiting the arrival of some missing Mam’selles, the influx of wardrobe malfunctions and lyrical shoe crises arose.

Mam'selles stretch before dress rehearsal for contest

Varsity drill team director Kelly Long and Varsity assistant/JV director Charity Hartweck were doing last minute costume checks and using safety pin tricks to make sure everything fit correctly as the girls lined up to do a full run-through of their three routines.

The first routine was a fun tribal dance full of verve as the girls danced with props including dream catchers, drums and feathered sticks. The second routine was a Flintstones kick routine that may be recognized from half-time at a basketball game. The girls were decked out in handmade Fred and Wilma gear, which is quite possibly the cutest costumes ever. The third routine was a pom routine which involved an entirely fast-pace dance which you’ll miss if you blink for a second.

The mam'selles dress up as Fred and Wilma for a kick routine.

The Mam’selles competed on Saturday, February 20 in Quinlan, Texas and won Grand Champion as well as several other awards including:

Sweepstakes- 90 or above on all 3 routines
Danceline Gold- 95 or above on all 3 routines
Grand Champion- highest scores in our division
Judges Award for Kick
Choreography Award for Prop
Best Kick Category
Best in Pom Category
Best in Prop Category
Zulma Ibarra placed in the top 5 for best kicks

Jennie Vu won the Anita Jefferson Conley Award for Excellence

Congratulations, Mam’selles!
