For director Peter Jackson, releasing a film with a such a big fanbase wouldn’t be a first. From the author J.R.R Tolkien, “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” was released Dec. 13 to many awaiting fans. Any book-based film always has the pressures to exeed to the original stories and pay as much respect to the book as possible. Unfortunately “The Hobbit” didn’t exactly do that. For the fans who are deeply dedicated to the book of Tolkien, they might have been disappointed by the film due to some new story lines and characters Jackson had added.
Having found that to be my only disappointment by the film, “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” is based upon a quest of a wizard and 13 dwarfs on a journey to Erabor to take back the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon, all in company of their hobbit “burglar” Bilbo Baggins. The setting of this film was that of New Zealand which makes the perfect Middle Earth for “The Hobbit.” Either it was the beauty of the setting or just the incredible cinematography, I sometimes found myself forgetting to focus on what was going on with the characters and story and noticed the cinematography was a runner up for the spotlight instead. It truly was a greatly done masterpiece and i believe that “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” would be 161 minutes of action packed adventure. The characters were spot on and the film kept the action and suspense at a good pace that kept the audience afraid of the end of the film.
